A recent study featured in The Guardian shows that the number of Americans reading for pleasure has dropped by 40% over the last 20 years. In 2003, 28% of people read books for enjoyment; by 2023, that number fell to just 16%.

The research highlights that the biggest declines are among Black Americans, those with lower income or education levels, and people living in rural areas. The findings raise concerns about how this trend could affect learning, well-being, and access to culture.

Interestingly, the study also found that while fewer people are reading, those who do are spending more time doing it. Reading with children has also remained steady over the years.
